The grip is the most critical element of the successful tennis swing. Many beginners make the mistake of holding the racket too tightly or too loosely and end up hitting the ball too far or making an incorrect contact or even having the racket fall off when they are swinging at the ball. By holding the racket in the correct way will give you the best opportunity to strike the ball correctly every time.

Another important thing to be aware of is that your forehand swing path should be straight from the beginning and then curve toward the top of your body as you approach the top of your follow through. This issue can be resolved by holding the racket with neutral grip. Closed grips are ideal for tennis players with an open forehand. This can be achieved by placing the racket over your head, while your knees are bent and your elbows are locked.

Tennis players that have a dominant hand should move the racket over their heads and then over their shoulder. The racket should face your crotch if left handed, and it should face your waist if you’re left handed. This will stop the head-over-head swing or the under-shoulder swing from occurring.
