A successful tennis swing is contingent on your grip. Many new players make the mistake of holding their racket too loose or tight and then miss the ball and making poor contact or letting their racket slide when they swing at the ball. The best way to strike the ball correctly is to hold the racket correctly in the right position.
Another important thing to remember is that your forehand’s path should be straight. When you reach the top end of your follow-through, your forehand’s path should curve towards your top. This is referred to as a cut shot or high arc. A low arc or hook would start out with a more natural wrist hinge and wrist extension. These aspects will affect the kind of shots you must be learning. For example, if you are practicing a technique referred to as the bank shot your forehand swing path will naturally turn toward the top as you move closer to the ball.
Be sure to keep your shoulders in line with the ball. This helps to keep your shoulders in constant contact with the ball as your arms move freely. Keep in mind that the shoulders must not leave the socket or your racquet while you are swinging. If this happens, it will be very difficult to catch the ball.
As you approach the ball, be sure to move your arm to your side, not from your backside. Rotating your arms towards your side can reduce your power and ability to generate power. You need to have a strong grip to control your arm’s movement. A weak grip can cause injuries. It can cause you miss the ball, or cause you to overextend your arms. This could lead to injury.
Another key factor in the correct grip is the angle you stand at. The majority of tennis players are right-handed and have their right arm stretched across their body. For those who are just beginning the left arm is usually carried across their body. Most coaches recommend that you hold the club with a neutral grip or similar to a baseball posture. Holding the club in a neutral position will help prevent you from having an arm that is not dominant when you swing.
Tennis players who have open stance forehand tend to have problems with their forearms. Forehands with an open stance tend to have problems with their grip. This issue can be resolved by holding the racket with neutral grip. Tennis players with open stance forehand should attempt to have a closed grip. This can be achieved by placing the racket on your skull, with your knees bent, and keeping your elbows locked.
Tennis players who are non-dominant hand should move the racket above their head and over their shoulders. If you’re a right-handed player the racket should point towards your crotch. If you’re a lefthanded player, the racket should be pointing towards your waist. This will prevent the over-the head swing and the under-the shoulder swing from happening. Keep your wrists straight as you swing. Also, ensure you don’t give any part of your body too much space.
