A successful tennis swing is dependent on your grip. Many new players make the mistake of holding their racket too loose or tight and end up missing the ball and making poor contact or having their racket slip when they swing at the ball. The right way to hold the racket in the right way will give you the best opportunity to hit the ball accurately every time.
The other thing you need to remember is that your forehand swing path should be straight from the beginning and then curve upwards towards the top of your body as you approach the top of your follow through. This is called cut shot or high arc. A hook with a low arc will have an inherent wrist hinge as well as wrist extension. These factors will influence the type of shots that you need to master. This can lead to injury.
The angle of your stance is an important aspect to ensure an effective grip. The majority of tennis players are right-handed and have their right arm slung across their body. For beginners their left arm is typically carried across their body. Most coaches recommend that you hold the club with a neutral grip or similar to a baseball position. A neutral grip will stop you from swinging with an arm that is not dominant.
Forehand tennis players who have an open stance tend to have problems with their forearms. Open stance forehand players tend to have problems with their grip. A great solution to this problem is to hold the racket using a neutral grip. Tennis players with an open stance forehand must try to hold the racket with a closed grip. This can be achieved by putting the racket behind your head while your knees are bent and your elbows are locked.
Tennis players who have a non-dominant hand should swing the racket above their head and over their shoulder. The racket should be facing your crotch if a right handed player and should be facing your waist if you’re left-handed. This will prevent the swing that is over the head or the swing under the shoulder from occurring.
