The grip is the most important element of a successful tennis swing. Many beginners make the error of holding the racket in a way that is too loose or tight and end up missing the ball and making poor contact or letting their racket slide when they swing at the ball. By holding the racket in the correct way will provide you with the best chance to hit the ball in the right way every time.

Another important thing to keep in mind is that your forehand’s swing path should be straight from the beginning and then curve toward the top of your body as you approach the top of your follow through. This is called cut or high arc shot. A low arc or hook would start out with a more natural wrist hinge and wrist extension. These factors will determine the type of shots you should be practicing. For example, if you are practicing a technique referred to as the bank shot your forehand’s swing path will naturally shift towards the top as you get closer to the ball.

The angle of your stance is an important factor in ensuring a good grip. Most tennis beginners are right-handed and have their right arm slung across their bodies. For those who are just beginning their left arm is usually carried over their body. Most coaches suggest holding the club with a neutral grip or in a similar way to a baseball grip. A neutral grip will stop you from hitting with an arm that is not dominant.

Tennis players that have an open stance forehand tend to have issues with their forearms. Forehand players with an open stance are more likely to have issues with their grip. This issue can be fixed by holding the racket in neutral grip. Closed grips are best for tennis players with an open forehand. You can achieve this by placing the racket in front of your skull, with your knees bent and your elbows locked.

Tennis players who have a dominant hand should move the racket over their head and over their shoulders. If you’re a right handed player the racket should be facing your crotch. If you’re a lefthanded player, the racket should be pointing towards your waist. This will help prevent either the swing that is over the head or the under-the-shoulder swing from occurring. When you swing, keep your wrists straight and down your hips so that you don’t give either side of your body any space to swing.
