The grip is the most crucial aspect of a successful tennis swing. Many new players make the mistake of holding their racket too loose or tight and then miss the ball and making poor contact or having their racket slip when they swing at the ball. Holding the racket the right way will give you the best opportunity to strike the ball correctly every time.
Another thing to keep in mind is that your forehand swing path should be straight. As you get closer to the top of your follow-through, your forehand swing path should curve towards your top. This is known as cut or high arc shot. A hook with a low arc would have an inherent wrist hinge as well as wrist extension. These factors can affect the kind of shots you must be learning. If you are working on the bank shot technique, your forehand swing path will naturally curve toward the top as it gets closer to the ball.
Remember to always swing with your shoulders in line with the ball. This will keep your shoulders in constant contact with the ball as your arms move freely. The angle of your stance is an important aspect to ensure a good grip. The majority of tennis players are right handed and have their right arm slung across their body. For beginners the left arm is usually slung across their body. Most coaches recommend using an even grip, or in a manner similar to a baseball grip. A neutral grip will prevent you from hitting with an arm that isn’t dominant.
Tennis players that have an open stance forehand tend to have issues with their forearms. When players with an open stance forehand they tend to over-turn their wrists and not have a proper grip. This issue can be resolved by holding the racket in a neutral grip. Tennis players who have open stance forehand must try to hold the racket with a closed grip. You can achieve this by placing the racket in front of your skull, with your knees bent, and your elbows locked.
Tennis players who have a non-dominant hand should move the racket in front of their head and over their shoulders. The racket should face your crotch if an right-handed player, and it should face your waist if a left handed player. This will prevent the over-the-head swing or the swing under the shoulder from occurring. When you swing, keep your wrists straight and lower your hips to ensure that you do not give either side of your body a chance to swing.
