Tennis players can be grouped into two broad categories based on their skill level to hit the ball further and higher than a backhand or forehand. Most times, tennis players struggle with hitting forehands because they aren’t aware of how to engage the correct muscles for their forehands, and in which order to hit powerful forehands. Also, tennis players struggle with their backhands as they do not know enough about how to properly position themselves for a nice backhand down the court. These two areas are vital to the game and need to be addressed.
A successful tennis swing is contingent on the grip you use. Many new players make the mistake of holding their racket too loose or tight and end up missing the ball making poor contact, or having their racket slip when they hit the ball. The best method to hit the ball correctly is to keep the racket correctly in the right position.
The other thing you need to keep in mind is that your forehand swing should start out straight and then curve towards the top of your body as you reach the top of your follow through. This is referred to as cut shot or high arc. A hook with a low arc would have a natural wrist hinge and wrist extension. These factors will influence the kind of shots you need to master. For example, if you are practicing a technique that is known as the bank shot, your forehand swing will naturally turn toward the top as you get closer to the ball.
Always keep your shoulders in line with the ball. This will ensure that your shoulders are always in contact with your ball which allows your arms to move freely. Keep in mind that the shoulders should never leave the socket or your racquet while you are swinging. If this happens, it could be very difficult to take the ball back.
As you approach the ball, ensure to rotate your arm from your side, not from your backside. Rotating your arms to the side could reduce your power and your ability generate power. You need a solid grip to control your arm’s movement. A weak grip can cause injury. It could cause you to miss the ball, or cause you to overextend your arms. This could result in injury.
The angle of your stance is also an important aspect to ensure the grip you have. The majority of tennis players are right-handed and wear their right hand spread across their body. The left arm of beginners is often slung across their body. Most coaches recommend using a neutral grip or in a manner similar to a baseball position. A neutral grip will stop you from swinging with an arm that is not dominant.
Forehand tennis players with open stances tend to have issues with their forearms. Open stance forehand players tend to have problems with their grip. This issue can be fixed by using a neutral grip. Tennis players with open stance forehands should try to use a closed grip. This can be accomplished by placing the racket on your head while your knees are bent and your elbows are locked.
Tennis players that have a non-dominant hand should swing the racket above their head and then over their shoulder. The racket should be facing your crotch in case you are an right-handed player and the racket should be pointing towards your waist if you’re a left handed player. This will prevent the over-the head swing as well as the under-the-shoulder swing from occurring. When you swing, keep your wrists straight and down your hips, making sure you do not give either side of your body a chance to swing.
