A successful tennis swing is contingent on your grip. Many beginners make the error of holding the racket too loose or tight and then miss the ball and making poor contact or having their racket slip when they swing at the ball. By holding the racket in the correct way will give you the best opportunity to strike the ball correctly every time.
Another important thing to remember is that your forehand’s path should be straight. As you get closer to the top of your follow-through, your forehand swing path should be curved towards your top. This is known as a high arc or cut shot. A hook with a low arc would start out with the more natural wrist hinge and wrist extension. These factors will influence the type of shots you need to master.
