These two areas are crucial to the game and need to be addressed.
The grip is the most critical aspect of a successful tennis swing. Many beginners make the error of holding the racket too tightly or too loosely and end up hitting the ball too far, making improper contact, or having the racket break off when they swing at the ball. Holding the racket the right way will provide you with the best chance to hit the ball in the right way every time.
The other important factor to remember is that your forehand swing path should begin straight and then curve upwards towards the top of your body as you approach the top of your follow-through. This is called cut shots or high arc. A low arc or hook would start out with a more natural wrist hinge and wrist extension. These aspects will determine what type of shots you should be practicing. If you are working on the bank shot technique the forehand swing is likely to curve towards the top as it gets closer to the ball.
Be sure to keep your shoulders in line with the ball. This helps to keep your shoulders in constant contact with the ball as your arms swing freely. Remember that your shoulders should never be removed from the socket or racquet while you are swinging. This can make it extremely difficult to take the ball back in the event that this happens.
When you approach the ball, make sure that your arm is directed from your side and not towards your backside. Rotating your arm towards your side can decrease your power and ability generate power. The angle of your stance is also an important aspect to ensure a good grip. Most tennis beginners are right-handed and have their right arm slung across their bodies. For beginners their left arm is typically carried over their body. The majority of coaches advise holding the club with a neutral grip or a style similar to a baseball posture. By holding the club in a neutral position will ensure that you don’t have an arm that is not dominant when you swing.
Tennis players that have an open stance forehand tend to have issues with their forearms. Open stance forehand players tend to have issues with their grip. This issue can be resolved by holding the racket in a neutral grip. Tennis players who have open stance forehand should attempt to hold the racket with a closed grip. This can be achieved by putting the racket behind your head, while your knees are bent and your elbows are locked.
Tennis players who have a non-dominant hand should move the racket above their head and above their shoulders. The racket should point towards your crotch in case you are an right-handed player and the racket should be pointing towards your waist if left handed. This will stop the swing that is over the head or the under-the-shoulder swing from occurring. When you swing keep your wrists straight and lower your hips so that you do not give either side of your body a chance to swing.
