Tennis is a very popular sport. Everyone can play tennis, from beginners to professionals. Tennis players can be grouped into two broad categories based on their ability to hit the ball more and higher than a forehand or backhand. Most often, tennis players struggle with their forehands as they don’t know how to properly engage the proper muscles for their forehands and in what order to hit strong forehands. Also, tennis players struggle with backhands due to the fact that they aren’t aware about the proper way to set themselves up to hit a perfect backhand on the court. These two areas are crucial to the sport and must be addressed.
A successful tennis swing is dependent on your grip. Many beginners make the mistake of gripping the racket too tight or loose and end up not hitting the ball or making a poor contact or having the racket fall off when they swing at the ball. The best way to hit the ball correctly is to hold the racket in the correct position.
Another important thing to remember is that your forehand swing path should be straight. As you get closer to the top of your follow-through, your forehand’s swing path should curve towards your top. This is called a cut shot or high arc. A low arc or hook starts with an easier wrist hinge and wrist extension. These factors will influence the kind of shots you should be learning. For instance, if you are practicing a technique known as the bank shot, your forehand’s swing path will naturally turn toward the top as you move closer to the ball.
Keep your shoulders in line with the ball when you swing. This helps keep your shoulders in constant contact with the ball even as your arms move freely. Keep in mind that the shoulders must not move away from the socket or the racquet while you are swinging. If this happens, it could be very difficult to take the ball back.
When approaching the ball, ensure that your arm is directed towards your side, and not your backside. Rotating your arms towards your side can reduce your power and ability generate power. You need a solid grip to control your arm’s rotation. A weak grip could be dangerous since it can cause you miss the ball or it can cause you to overextend your arm. This can lead to injury.
Another key factor in the proper grip is the angle you stand at. Most tennis beginners are right-handed and carry their right arm across their body. The left arm of beginner players is often slung across their body. Most coaches recommend using an even grip, or in a similar way to a baseball position. Holding the club in a neutral position can aid in preventing an arm that is not dominant during your swing.
Open stance forehand tennis players tend to have issues with their forearms. If players have an open-stance forehand, they tend to twist their wrists and not have a proper grip. A great way to solve this issue is to hold the racket with a neutral grip. Closed grips are best for tennis players who have an open forehand. This can be done by placing the racket over your head, while your knees are bent and your elbows are locked.
Tennis players that have a hand that is not dominant should swing the racket over their head and over their shoulders. If you’re a left handed player the racket should point towards your crotch. If you’re a left-handed player, the racket should be pointing towards your waist. This will stop the swing that is over the head or the under-shoulder swing from happening. Keep your wrists straight while you swing. Also, ensure you don’t allow any side of your body too much room.
