Most often, tennis players have difficulty with hitting forehands because they do not know how to engage the correct muscles for their forehands or in the right order to hit powerful forehands. Also, tennis players struggle with backhands because they aren’t aware about how to set themselves up to hit a perfect backhand on the court. These two areas are vital to the sport and must be addressed.
A successful tennis swing is dependent on the grip you use. Many new players make the mistake of holding their racket in a way that is too loose or tight and end up missing the ball making poor contact, or letting their racket slide when they hit the ball. The best way to hit the ball correctly is to hold the racket correctly in the right position.
The other important factor to keep in mind is that your forehand swing should begin straight and then curve toward the top of your body when you get to the top of your follow through. This is called cut shot or high arc. A hook with a low arc would have a natural wrist hinge and wrist extension. These aspects will affect the kind of shots you must be learning. If you are practicing the bank shot technique the forehand swing course will naturally curve towards the top as it gets closer to the ball.
Always keep your shoulders in line with the ball as you swing. This helps keep your shoulders in constant contact with the ball even as your arms move freely. When you are approaching the ball, make sure to move your arm to your side, not from your backside. Rotating your arm on your side actually weakens the ability of your arm to generate power and produce a strong backswing. To get your arm to rotate correctly you need to be able to grip the club. A weak grip could cause injuries. It can cause you not to hit the ball or cause you overextend your arms. This could result in injury.
Another crucial aspect of the correct grip is the angle of your stance. The majority of tennis players are right-handed and wear their right hand draped across their body. For beginners the left arm is typically carried over their body. Most coaches suggest holding the club with a neutral grip or a style similar to a baseball posture. By holding the club in a neutral posture will aid in preventing an arm that is not dominant when you swing.
Tennis players who have open stance forehand are more likely to have issues with their forearms. When players with an open stance forehand, they tend to twist their wrists and do not have a proper grip. A great solution to this issue is to hold the racket using a neutral grip. Closed grips are the best choice for tennis players with an open forehand. This can be accomplished by placing the racket over your head, while your knees are bent and your elbows are locked.
Tennis players who are non-dominant hand should move the racket in front of their head and above their shoulders. If you’re a left handed player the racket should be facing your crotch. If you’re a left-handed player, it should face towards your waist. This will stop the over-the-head swing or the under-the-shoulder swing from happening. When you swing keep your wrists straight and lower your hips, making sure you do not give either side of your body any room to swing.
