The grip is the most critical element of an effective tennis swing. Many beginners make the mistake of gripping the racket too tight or loose, and end up either hitting the ball too far, making improper contact, or even having the racket break off when they are swinging at the ball. Holding the racket the right way will provide you with the best chance to hit the ball in the right way every time.

Another important thing to remember is that your forehand’s swing path should begin straight and then curve towards the top of your body as you reach the top of your follow-through. This is called a cut shot or high arc. A hook with a low angle will have an inherent wrist hinge as well as wrist extension. These aspects will affect the kind of shots you should be learning. The angle of your stance is an important factor in ensuring an effective grip. Most tennis players are right-handed and have their right arm slung across their bodies. The left arm of newbies is often slung across their body. Most coaches suggest using a neutral grip, or in a manner similar to a baseball position. A neutral grip can stop you from hitting with an arm that isn’t dominant.

Forehand tennis players who have an open stance tend to have problems with their forearms. Forehands with an open stance tend to have issues with their grip. One way to address this problem is to hold the racket with an even grip. Closed grips are the best choice for tennis players with an open forehand. This can be achieved by placing the racket in front of your skull, keeping your knees bent and your elbows locked.

Tennis players who have a non-dominant handed should swing the racket in front of their head and above their shoulders. If you’re a right-handed player the racket should be facing your crotch. If you’re a lefthanded player, it should be facing towards your waist. This will stop the over-the head swing as well as the under-the-shoulder swing from happening.
