Most times, tennis players struggle with hitting forehands because they aren’t aware of how to use the right muscles for their forehands, and in what order to hit strong forehands. Tennis players also struggle with their backhands due to lack of understanding about how to position themselves to hit a strong backhand down the court. Therefore, these two important areas of the game must to be addressed by those who want to be a pro at the game.
A successful tennis swing is dependent on the grip you use. Many beginners make the mistake of holding the racket in a way that is too loose or tight and end up missing the ball and making poor contact or having their racket slip when they swing at the ball. The best method to hit the ball correctly is to keep the racket correctly in the right position.
Another important thing to remember is that your forehand’s path should be straight. As you get closer to the top of your follow-through, your forehand’s swing path should be curved towards your top. This is known as cut or high arc shot. A hook with a low arc would have a natural wrist hinge and wrist extension. These aspects will determine what type of shots you should be practicing. For example, if you are practicing a technique referred to as the bank shot your forehand’s swing path will naturally shift towards the top as you get closer to the ball.
Always keep your shoulders in line with the ball as you swing. This will ensure that your shoulders remain in constant contact with the ball which allows your arms to move freely. Keep in mind that the shoulders must never move away from the socket or the racquet while you are swinging. If this happens, it will be very difficult to take the ball back.
When you get close to the ball, ensure to rotate your arm from your side, not your backside. The arm that is rotated on your side can weaken the ability of your arm to generate power and create a great backswing. In order to get your arm to rotate correctly you need to hold a firm grip on the club. A weak grip could be dangerous since it can cause you to lose the ball or could cause you to overextend your arm. This can lead to injuries.
Another important aspect in the proper grip is the angle of your stance. The majority of tennis players are right-handed and wear their right hand slung across the body. For those who are just beginning, their left arm is typically carried across their body. The majority of coaches advise using a neutral grip or a style similar to a baseball position. A neutral grip will prevent you from swinging with an arm that isn’t dominant.
Tennis players with open stance forehands tend to have issues with their forearms. Open stance forehand players tend to have issues with their grip. This issue can be resolved by holding the racket with a neutral grip. Closed grips are ideal for players with an open forehand. This can be accomplished by placing the racket on your head, while your knees are bent and your elbows are locked.
Tennis players that have a non-dominant hand should swing the racket above their head and over their shoulders. If you’re a left handed player the racket should be facing your crotch. If you’re a lefthanded player, the racket should be pointing towards your waist. This will stop the swing that is over the head or the under-shoulder swing from happening. Keep your wrists straight as you swing. Also, make sure you don’t give any part of your body too much room.
