Tennis players can be divided into two broad categories based on their ability to hit the ball farther and higher than a forehand or a backhand. Most times, tennis players struggle with hitting forehands because they do not know how to properly engage the correct muscles for their forehands, and in what order to hit strong forehands. Tennis players also have trouble with their backhands due to lack of understanding about how to properly position themselves to hit a strong backhand down the court. These two areas are essential to the game and must be addressed.
A successful tennis swing is dependent on the grip you use. Many beginners make the mistake of holding the racket too loose or tight and end up missing the ball making poor contact, or having their racket slip when they hit the ball. The best way to strike the ball correctly is to keep the racket in the proper position.
Another important thing to remember is that your forehand’s path should be straight. As you get closer to the top end of your follow-through, your forehand’s swing path should be curved towards your top. This is called a high arc or cut shot. A hook with a low arc starts with an easier wrist hinge and wrist extension. These aspects will determine what kind of shots you should be practicing. For instance, if, for example, you are practicing a technique referred to as the bank shot your forehand swing path will naturally shift towards the top as you move closer to the ball.
Always keep your shoulders aligned with the ball. This helps to keep your shoulders in constant contact with the ball even as your arms are free to move. Remember that your shoulders must never move away from the socket or the tennis racquet during your swing. This can make it extremely difficult to catch the ball when this happens.
When approaching the ball, make sure that your arm is directed from your side and not to your backside. Rotating your arms to your side can actually decrease your power and ability generate power. You need to have a strong grip to control your arm’s rotation. A weak grip can be very dangerous because it could cause you to lose the ball or could cause you to overextend your arm. This could lead to injury.
The angle of your stance is an important aspect to ensure a good grip. Most tennis players are right-handed and have their right arm slung across their bodies. The left arm of beginner players is often slung across their body. Most coaches suggest holding the club with a neutral grip, or in a similar way to a baseball posture. A neutral grip will stop you from swinging with an arm that is not dominant.
Tennis players who have open stance forehand tend to have problems with their forearms. If players have an open stance forehand, they tend to over-turn their wrists and do not have a good grip. This problem can be solved by using neutral grip. Tennis players with an open stance forehand must try to use a closed grip. This can be done by placing the racket over your head, while your knees are bent and your elbows are locked.
Tennis players who are non-dominant handed should swing the racket above their head and over their shoulders. The racket should be facing your crotch if left handed and should be facing your waist if you’re left handed. This will stop the head-over-head swing or the under-the-shoulder swing from occurring. When you swing keep your wrists straight and lower your hips, making sure you don’t allow either side of your body any space to swing.
