A successful tennis swing depends on your grip. Many beginners make the mistake of holding their racket too tight or loosely and end up missing the ball making poor contact, or having their racket slip when they swing at the ball. By holding the racket in the correct way will give you the best chance to strike the ball correctly every time.

Another important thing to remember is that your forehand’s swing path should be straight. As you approach the top of your follow-through, your forehand swing path should be curved towards your top. This is called cut or high arc shot. A low arc or hook starts with a more natural wrist hinge and wrist extension. These aspects will affect the kind of shots you must be learning. If you are working on the bank shot technique your forehand’s swing course will naturally curve towards the top as it gets closer to the ball.

Always keep your shoulders in line with the ball whenever you swing. This will ensure that your shoulders are always in contact with your ball and allow your arms to move freely. While you swing, your shoulders should not leave the racquet’s socket. If this happens, it will be extremely difficult to capture the ball.

When you approach the ball, make sure that your arm is pointing towards your side, and not to your backside. Moving your arm to your side can actually decrease your power and ability generate power. A neutral grip can stop you from swinging with an arm that is not dominant.

Open stance forehand tennis players tend to have issues with their forearms. Open stance forehand players tend to have issues with their grip. This issue can be resolved by holding the racket with an upright grip. Closed grips are best for tennis players with an open forehand. This can be done by placing the racket on your head, while your knees are bent and your elbows are locked.

Tennis players who are non-dominant hand should move the racket above their head and over their shoulders. If you’re a left handed player, the racket should face your crotch. If you’re a left-handed player, it should be facing towards your waist. This will stop the swing that is over the head or the under-shoulder swing from happening.
