The grip is the most critical element of a successful tennis swing. Many beginners make the mistake of gripping the racket to tightly or loosely and end up not hitting the ball or making a poor contact or even having the racket fall off when they are swinging at the ball. Holding the racket the right way will provide you with the best chance to hit the ball accurately every time.
Another important thing to remember is that your forehand swing path should be straight. As you approach the top end of your follow-through, your forehand’s path should curve towards your top. This is known as a cut shot or high arc. A low arc or hook starts with an easier wrist hinge and wrist extension. These aspects will affect the type of shots you should be learning. For instance, if you are practicing a technique referred to as the bank shot your forehand’s swing path will naturally shift towards the top as you move closer to the ball.

The angle of your stance is also an important factor in ensuring a good grip. Most tennis players are right handed and have their right arm stretched across their body. For those who are just beginning the left arm is usually carried across their body. The majority of coaches suggest that you hold the club in a neutral grip or similar to a baseball posture. The club should be held in a neutral posture will aid in preventing an arm that is not dominant when you swing.
Tennis players that have an open stance forehand are more likely to have issues with their forearms. If players have an open stance forehand they tend to twist their wrists, and they do not have a good grip. This issue can be resolved by using an upright grip. Closed grips are best for tennis players with an open forehand. This can be done by placing the racket on your head while your knees are bent and your elbows are locked.
Tennis players who have a non-dominant hand should hold the racket in front of their head and over their shoulders. If you’re a left handed player, the racket should face your crotch.
