The grip is the most critical element of an effective tennis swing. Many new players make the mistake of gripping the racket too tightly or too loosely and end up missing the ball, making improper contact, or having the racket fall off when they are swinging at the ball. By holding the racket in the correct way will give you the best opportunity to strike the ball correctly every time.
Another important thing to be aware of is that your forehand swing should be straight from the beginning and then curve toward the top of your body when you get to the top of your follow through. This is referred to as cut or high arc shot. A low arc or hook starts with the more natural wrist hinge and wrist extension. These factors can affect the type of shots you need to master. If you are working on the bank shot technique, your forehand swing is likely to curve towards the top as it gets closer to the ball.
Remember to always swing with your shoulders in line with the ball. This helps keep your shoulders in constant contact with the ball as your arms are free to move. The angle of your stance is also an important aspect to ensure a good grip. The majority of tennis players are right-handed and have their left hand spread across their body. For beginners the left arm is typically carried across their body. The majority of coaches suggest that you hold the club in the neutral grip or similar to a baseball posture. Holding the club in a neutral position will help prevent you from having an arm that is not dominant when you swing.
Tennis players who have open stance forehands tend to have problems with their forearms. Forehand players with an open stance are more likely to have issues with their grip. A great solution to this problem is to hold the racket with an even grip. Closed grips are ideal for players with an open forehand. This can be achieved by placing the racket on your skull, keeping your knees bent, and keeping your elbows locked.
Tennis players that have a dominant hand should move the racket above their head and over their shoulders. If you’re a left handed player the racket should point towards your crotch.
