A successful tennis swing depends on the grip you use. Many beginners make the error of gripping the racket too tightly or loosely and end up missing the ball or making an incorrect contact or even having the racket break off when they swing at the ball. The best way to hit the ball correctly is to hold the racket in the correct position.
The other thing you need to remember is that your forehand swing path should start out straight and then curve towards the top of your body when you get to the top of your follow-through. This is called cut or high arc shot. A hook with a low arc will have an inherent wrist hinge as well as wrist extension. These aspects will determine what type of shots you should be practicing. Another key factor in the correct grip is the angle of your stance. Most tennis beginners are right handed and carry their right arm across their body. For those who are just beginning their left arm is usually slung over their body. Most coaches suggest using an even grip, or in a similar way to a baseball posture. The club should be held in a neutral posture will aid in preventing a non-dominant arm when you swing.
Open stance forehand tennis players tend to have issues with their forearms. If players have an open stance forehand, they are more likely to turn their wrists, and they do not have a good grip. One way to address this problem is to hold the racket with a neutral grip. Closed grips are best for tennis players who have an open forehand. This can be achieved by placing the racket over your head while your knees are bent and your elbows are locked.
Tennis players who are non-dominant hand should move the racket above their head and over their shoulders. If you’re a right handed player the racket should point towards your crotch. If you’re a lefthanded player, the racket should be pointing towards your waist. This will stop the over-the head swing and the under-the shoulder swing from occurring. Keep your wrists straight as you swing. Also, ensure that you don’t give any side of your body too much space.
