The grip is the most critical element of the successful tennis swing. Many new players make the mistake of holding the racket too tight or loose, and end up either hitting the ball too far, making improper contact, or having the racket break off when they swing at the ball. By holding the racket in the correct way will give you the best opportunity to strike the ball correctly every time.

The other important factor to be aware of is that your forehand swing path should start out straight and then curve toward the top of your body as you reach the top of your follow through. This is known as cut shots or high arc. A hook with a low arc will begin with a more natural wrist hinge and wrist extension. These factors will determine the kind of shots you need to be practicing. The left arm of beginner players is often carried over their body. The majority of coaches advise holding the club with a neutral grip, or in a similar way to a baseball posture. By holding the club in a neutral posture will aid in preventing a non-dominant arm when you swing.

Tennis players who have open stance forehand tend to have problems with their forearms. If a player has an open stance forehand they tend to twist their wrists and not have a good grip. A great solution to this problem is to hold the racket using a neutral grip. Tennis players with open stance forehand must try to use a closed grip. You can achieve this by placing the racket on your skull, your knees bent, and your elbows locked.

Tennis players with a dominant hand should move the racket above their head and over their shoulders. If you’re a right-handed player the racket should point towards your crotch.
